On 1887 Feb. 22, the Legislature passed and enacted Act. No. 18 which authorized the Governor to release from the state treasury $20,000 for the construction of a "hospital for the colored insane" on the grounds of the Tuscaloosa hospital. This series contains the papers of the building committee of that hospital. The records include correspondence and financial data on the hospital construction. The correspondence deals with needs and problems of the building committee and the financial sheets provide a recap of amounts spent and income received for the construction project. The agency responsible for the Insane Hospital was later known as State Hospitals.
